Mining is one of Newfoundland and Labrador's largest and oldest industries, and a major contributor to the economy of our province, especially in rural areas. There are more than a dozen mineral commodities that contribute to both our economy and quality of life. The commodities mined by the industry are as varied as their uses. Aggregates are used in road construction, iron used in structural steel, nickel used to produce stainless steel, and copper wire used in electrical generation and distribution.
Newfoundland and Labrador is a highly attractive exploration destination and a globally competitive mining jurisdiction, with world-class deposits. Seven metal mines currently produce iron ore, nickel, copper, zinc, cobalt, antimony and gold. Other operations mine slate, limestone and dolomite, amongst other commodities.
Our mining and mineral exploration companies directly provide high-paying jobs to more than 6000 men and women throughout the province. Expenditures by these companies find their way into all corners of Newfoundland and Labrador.
