There has been considerable discussion of the Life Science Economy (LSE) and its
potential on Canada. In July 2000, ministers of Federal, Provincial and Territorial
departments of agriculture agreed to cooperate to position Canada as the world
leader of life sciences by 2010. Agrifoods
and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada held consultations across the province to
discuss the “Life Science Economy”.
In order to position Newfoundland and Labrador within the federal-provincial
framework, four stakeholder consultation session were held. The participants
explored the potential benefits of the LSE to Newfoundland and Labrador and
those technologies for which the province is uniquely positioned to capture.
The participants represented a broad range of organizations from the private
sector, academic institutions, and provincial and federal government departments.
It is the intention of the consultation process to lead to the development of a
Newfoundland and Labrador Life Science Economy Strategy.
