Farm cash receipts in 2006 for the beef industry in Newfoundland and Labrador were $1.7
million. There are approximately 800 breeding animals in the province and the total
animals slaughtered including culled dairy cows in 2006 was 2500.
Most beef operations are part time with less than 25 breeding animals.
Sixty percent of producers are located in Western Newfoundland.
Local beef production has considerable potential for growth since
it accounts for less than 5% of consumption. However, high cost of land
development for forage and pasture affects producers ability to expand.
Marketing difficulties must also be addressed to ensure industry growth.
Competition from Western Canadian beef producers is very strong.
Grass-fed beef may be more economical to raise in some parts of the
province. Alternative feeds (including marine by-products) may displace
some imported grains. As well genetics can be improved using
artificial
insemination.
