The egg industry’s farm cash receipts is currently valued at over $12 million in the province. The average flock size has increased from 12,000
to 23,000 layers since 1986. Since 2000, production has increased to help
supply the rapidly expanding industrial product demand across Canada.
Egg Producers of Newfoundland and Labrador (formerly the Newfoundland Egg
Marketing Board) was established in 1971 and is responsible for managing the
production and marketing of eggs in the province.
The egg industry has the following opportunities in the province.
The high cost of feed ingredients and rations from mainland sources must
continue to be addressed.
Reducing below-grade production will improve profitability.
There is an opportunity to increase the number of farms growing their own
replacement pullets.
On farm feed processing can be investigated taking into consideration:
- Public grain storage
- On-farm feed facilities.
There may be an opportunity to develop facilities to process surplus eggs.
However, the industry is also faced with challenges such as the high cost of
feed ingredients and rations from mainland sources and the vigorous competition
from mainland egg suppliers.
