Agri-Lacta is a computerized management information service for
dairy farmers. Newfoundland farmers access this service through the
Atlantic Dairy Livestock Improvement Corporation (ADLIC). The service provides -
for a fee per cow per month - data collection, compilation, processing and
interpretation of results on:
Body Conditions Scores
Genealogy
Breeding Dates
Health Problems
Butter fat
Heifer Monitoring
Calving Dates
Milk protein
Culling Dates
Past histories
Feed Costs
Production
Feeding and breeding information
Somatic cell counts
This information is turned into an organized set of records
which the farmer can use to assess past performance, aid in current
decision making, identify problem areas and correct them,
as well as plan for future improvements.
The Ration-L feeding program attached to the production records
allows the fieldman, with the help of a lap top computer, immediate access to
information which can be left with the farmer. This feeding module, coupled with
the fieldman's knowledge of dairy cattle and forages, can balance a diet for
such items as protein and fat to most minerals and vitamins.
Recently a heifer management program called PROM-S has been added to Ration-L.
PROM-S enables the farmer client to monitor the progress of his heifers
from birth to first calving through the use of grouping, feed balancing
and physical measurements. Various reports and graphs are produced for
ease of understanding.
