Infectious Laryngotracheitis, or ILT, is a contagious disease of chickens
and related birds that can cause high levels of illness or mortality in
a poultry flock within a short period of time. As commercial flocks tend
to be isolated from many diseases, they have no immunity to ILT. If they are
exposed to this disease through contact with infected birds or on the clothing
of people who have been in contact with infected birds, it can cause severe
economic loss.
This Division manages a voluntary ILT control program in cooperation with
the Newfoundland and Labrador Chicken Marketing Board, and the Newfoundland
and Labrador Egg Marketing Board. Flocks that are identified with the disease
are depopulated and the buildings disinfected. They are then repopulated with
clean, vaccinated birds.
