How can I get a domestic cutting permit without coming to the office?
You can send a cheque or money order for $21.00 (payable to the Newfoundland
Exchequer Account) along with information on the location, volume of wood,
and other pertinent details. A
permit will be sent to you after your $21.00
fee and necessary information is received by
the Department.

Do I have to wait until I receive my domestic permit before I am allowed to cut?
Yes, you have
to wait until you receive your domestic
permit, maps and conditions before you can
legally cut domestic timber. These documents
must be in your possession at all times, while
harvesting wood, and ready for inspection
should you be checked by a Forestry Official.

Do I need a permit to cut dry wood?
Yes, a permit is required to cut any wood on Crown land. This includes brush, dead
wood or wood left on cutovers.

What can a helper added to my permit do? Can he cut wood without my being
there? Can he share in the wood? Does he need his own permit as well?
If you are in possession of wood, you must have a permit. In addition, domestic
wood is not for sale or barter and cannot be given to anyone. As a result, a
helper cannot cut wood on his own and he cannot share in the wood.

Do I need a sawmill licence to saw my lumber on someone else’s mill or
does his licence cover any logs?
If a person has a domestic sawmill licence he cannot saw for other people nor allow
others to do so. Logs cut on a domestic permit must be taken to a commercial
sawmill operator to be processed.

Is a permit required to burn brush and debris?
Yes, a Permit to Burn is required to burn brush. They are issued free from
any of the Department’s offices. |

Can the burnt wood be cut where the Badger fire was?
Yes, domestic permits are now being issued for that area. There is now a map
completed for area 81R and only burnt wood can be cut there. |

The volume on my permit for firewood is less now than last
year. Does this mean I must cut less wood?
No, the amount is the same, it is measured differently. It used to say 36m³
(stacked), now it says 22m³. Stacked measurement allowed for air spaces but now
it is measured as solid volume. |

Can sawlogs be cut on a domestic cutting permit?
Yes. The total of firewood and logs cannot exceed 22m³. If you only want logs you
must use the tops for firewood. |

Can you sell firewood cut on a domestic cutting permit?
A domestic cutting permit is for your own use, you cannot sell, barter or give as
a gift. |
