White Pine Management has been recently added to the
Province’s silviculture program.
Species is valuable but silvicultural enhancement has
been ignored until recently because of severe disease problems.
White Pine Blister Rust, introduced from Europe in the
early 1900's, has decimated White Pine by killing most of the regeneration.
A better understanding of the disease
and other issues has led to the implementation of new silvicultural prescriptions:
Planting 400-700 pine seedlings per hectare in
combination with spruce plantations
Genetic tree improvement programs - seed collection
programs which target disease resistant trees
Forest improvement programs to favour White Pine crop
trees
Pruning of juvenile trees to reduce their susceptibility
to disease |
