The Forest Resources has doubled its enforcement presence since
the mid-1990's with the cross-training of formerly separate Wildlife Officers and Forestry Officers
in the field. Now approximately 140 Conservation Officers are located throughout the Province,
trained to enforce all Forestry, Wildlife and Inland Fish legislation as well as related federal
legislation where designated (see Related Sites).
Essential training includes integrated enforcement, legislation and acts, and a safe and effective
work environment. Specialized training in Investigation Techniques, Covert Operations, Public Safety
(Wildfire Suppression and Animal Control) and Officer Safety are also addressed.
Conservation and protection of the forest and wildlife resources of Newfoundland and Labrador is a
priority of the department. The Department has taken on the challenge of an ecosystem based approach
in managing these resources. Conservation Officers in the field are making this strong commitment to
ecosystem management work with good compliance and enforcement of the laws of the land.
