The mandate of the Forest Resources Branch is to manage and conserve the Province's
ecosystems, under the principles of sustainable development, using an ecologically based
management philosophy, and sound environmental practices. This is achieved through the
implementation of the following forest management programs.
Activities under these programs include silviculture, access
road construction, forest fire suppression, insect
control, management planning, tree
nursery operations, inventory,
dealing with wildlife in residential areas, collisions or similar situations,
and public relations. In addition the Department is responsible
for issuing permits under various legislation as
well as the enforcement of forestry
and wildlife regulations in such areas as hunting and timber harvesting.
These programs and services are delivered through Regional Offices located in Gander, Corner Brook, and
Labrador as well as the Department’s District Offices which are located in Paddy’s Pond(St. John’s),
Clarenville, Gambo, Gander, Lewisporte, Bishop Falls, Springdale, Pasadena, Massey Drive(Corner Brook), St.Georges,
Port Saunders, Roddickton, Bay D’Espoir, Northwest River, Cartwright and Wabush. In addition the
Department has a number of satellite offices located throughout the Province which are primarily
used for forest fire protection
and enforcement activities.
