Approximately 0.28 million hectares are held in onshore
permits issued by the Department under the
Petroleum and Natural Gas Act. During the early
1990’s, the area received significant attention from the
petroleum industry as a result of a new interpretation
of the geology, a new regulatory regime, and an oil
discovery on the Port au Port Peninsula. Additional
interest was generated through the Minister's 2002
Request for Bids. Eight bids were conditionally accepted
for approximately 202,000 hectares, resulting in the
current Exploration Permits or Leases (pdf - 201kb).
Additional information about the resource potential of
onshore areas of Newfoundland and Labrador can be found
in the Department's Oil and Gas Report (pdf - 2mb), the
listing of Onshore Western Newfoundland Permit/Lease Holders (pdf
- 20kb), and related
maps and
reports.
