At local farm markets, or by contacting beef and sheep producers in your area.

9. Is the meat organic?

No, the meat in Newfoundland and Labrador is not organic. Any registered organic product will have the required markings/packaging which complies with the Canadian organic standards. Beef and Lamb produced in Newfoundland and Labrador is generally grass fed and free range grazed during the summer months with as little inputs as possible.

10. How do I get access to a veterinarian?

In this province, veterinarians work in a variety of different fields. Farm animal practice, laboratory diagnostics, aquaculture practice, and companion animal practice are those most recognized by the public. The Animal Health Division of this department offers farm animal veterinary services and laboratory diagnostic services.

11. Is rabies a threat in Newfoundland and Labrador?

Rabies in foxes is seen every few years in Labrador. The Island of Newfoundland is considered to be free of it though two incursions have occurred in recent history (1988/89 and 2002/03); in both cases it was eradicated from the island.

Rabies in bats exists but is only rarely found. Complete information is available.

12. Does Lyme disease or West Nile virus exist in Newfoundland and Labrador?

Lyme disease has been reported in dogs twice, and ticks carrying the bacteria are found every year on the island though no permanent populations are considered to exist here.

West Nile virus has never been found in the province.

Surveillance and research is carried out for both of these, as well as other vector-borne diseases. Further information on animal disease surveillance activities is available.

13. What activities are taken to protect food safety?

In this province there are both voluntary and mandatory food safety programs. More details on those operated by the Agrifoods Development Branch are available.

14. What laboratory testing is available through the Agrifoods Development Branch?

This Branch operates two laboratories, the Animal Health Laboratory and the Soil, Plant and Feed Laboratory. Services and fee schedules are available through the links above.
