The Natural Stone Assessment program (NSA) is intended to encourage companies and/or individuals to conduct exploration and natural stone assessment in the province by taking new or under-developed prospects to a more advanced stage. It will allow for identification of alternate uses for existing, and/or inactive stone quarries, (eg., evaluate potential to develop counter top stone from quarries originally used for monument stone, or waste from existing quarries being used for landscaping stone), and move towards increasing known reserves of natural stone in Newfoundland and Labrador. It will also encourage and promote a greater involvement by local entrepreneurs in the natural stone industry.
A total budget of $250,000 has been allocated toward providing non-repayable grants to cover 75 per cent of the cost of exploration and resource assessment on new or under-developed natural stone prospects, up to a maximum of $50,000 per project.
