Heavy rain (70 mm) fell in a brief period on April 11-12, resulting in widespread flooding in St. John's.

The areas affected included Quidi Vidi Lake, The Goulds, and Leary's Brook both upstream and downstream of the Avalon Mall. One entry road to the Health Sciences complex was closed. The Goulds racetrack flooded, resulting in evacuation of horses from barns.

Flooding was accentuated around Quidi Vidi Lake as a flood control gate at the outflow jammed.

The lake overflowed, with water reaching the walls of the Penitentiary, and flooding some basements.

Long Pond rose 1-2 m above normal water levels as shown by the pattern of debris left after waters receded, and the Waterford River also rose to flood levels.
