The westbound express was caught between landslide and the washout of a culvert following very heavy rain (the same event caused flooding in st. John's and other communities). The landslide occurred at Birchy Point, about half a mile west of Port Blandford. rocks, trees and debris were piled across the tracks. Further rain resulted in more movement and material being brought down onto the tracks, and a steam shovel was brought in to clear the tracks. It was estimated that 30 tons of material were involved.
