Bob French and Harry Phillips escaped being buried alive when a landslide occurred at the rear of the Thorne Building on Buckles Valley Road, at the top of Buckles Hill. The men were investigating a water leak at the rear of the building when several tons of gravel broke away from the bank and cascaded down Buckles Valley Road, sweeping away a power line, 20 feet of boardwalk, an Avalon Telephone shack and carried away the verandah of the Beson Home. It was thought that water lines froze and then burst; and the resulting seepage under the hillside undermined it and bought about the slide.
